Patented Chip Deflector / Clip-on Silencer Tools were originally designed for the Ammco company many decades ago.  This tool's main concept was to knock down flying metal flakes and chips that are thrown from the bits as they cut rotors.  As the abrasive debris pieces hit the bottom of parallel mini-pads are deflected
downward into the chip tray and not up on the work surfaces.
These loose chips can cause eye injury but they also cause damage to the lathe,
particularly
the main arbor bearing and other parts covered by protective boots.
Tip:  Never blow off chips with compressed air or you drive the metal dust into your machine, dust off with a brush.
Over the years we have come to also love this tool for its amazing "silencing" action during a rotor resurfacing procedure.  It's almost magical the way that it reduces noise, vibration, and annoying chatter, the primary reason for rough rotor finishes.  This is particularly of value on "non-vented" rotors, since you can't add a heavy wrap around vented silencer spring.
Simply spread the mini-pads, slip tool over the rotor (directly on top of bits), tighten the patented hold-down strap via the twin cutter head
and you are ready to go!
